James Pottinger of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (son of George Pottinger and Isabella Bews) was executor of the estate of his cousin James Pottinger (son of William Pottinger). He distributed some of the estate to cousins still in the Orkneys. He received at least two letters from his cousin James Pottinger one of the cousins remaining in the Orkneys. Dear cousin in answer to your letter i heard some time ago that our cousin James was dead and i am sorry to sea by your letter that he was so adicted to drink it was a bad end for him poor fellow i would rather that he died a cristian but i suppose he ever lived a wild life Dear cousin about what is left you will do what is right you know all about it and how it should be divided so you will have to put it all right it will be a great help to me 2 years ago i lost a horse that was worth over 30 pounds and a cow i lost about the same time so you see I have had some hard days it has kept me (??)ay hard up but still i am not complaining I still have a fair measure of health there is no branch bank in Westray now nearer than Kirkwall there is the Nathional bank and the Comercial and the Union so when you send what has to come you might send it through the National bank and if the lot is sent to me i will divid it equal to the last penny Dear cousin if you had some small article belonging to our late cousin James say a watch gard or some small thing like that i would like to have some small thing belonging to him you will see if you have any thing my youngest son lives home with us that is Robert William is married in sanday and we have 2 sons in America John is in Chicago he is a joiner James is in Racine he is a blacksmith and horse shower our oldest son George went to Australia he is a baker at a place called Charter Towers but it is long since we had any letter from him Dear cousin when you write you will give me a lot of news and how all your brothers and sister are all getting along i will have to close at this time with kindest love to you all wife and family and all friends

Ouseness, Westray

Dear cousin in answer to your letter i got it all right and we thank you very kindly for the trouble you took for my sake it was a great help to be two years ago i lost a young horse he was worth over 30 pounds and a cow over 13 pounds so you see my luck has not been very great but still it is no use to complane I am getting old and not so able to work as i were I am 67 years old past it will be some time yet before i get the old age pension if i live so long it is 45 years past we married so you see that a good long while together our oldest son George if he is living is in Australia it is long since we had any letter from him if he is living at a placed called Charter Towers a baker at a gold diging place

John is in Chicago he is a joiner working in a reaping machine factory and James is in Racine he is a blacksmith and horse shower William is lives in Sanday he works lots at diving when he gets the chance and Robert is home beside us and works the croft along with us and takes work when hegets the chance the fishing is almost done here owing to the trallers doing it all up i were out at the sea on Friday we got a few cod the hering fishing is doing nothing this year there are over 200 steam drifters fishing fishing out of Stonsay now the are going that far to sea for them that it gives the sailing boasts no chance to get so far to sea Dear cousin i would like if you could send me your likeness and family i would be very happy to see it i will close at this with our kindest love to you and and family not forgetting your brothers and sister
