Family History

Provided by Stuart Pottinger

John Stout Pottinger, son of James, and Jane Stout Pottinger, was born at Ousness, Westray, June 3, 1867. He was living there when the census was taken in 1881, and emigrated soon after, working first as a lumberjack in Wisconsin before he moved to Chicago; (in 1884 helped his younger brother, James, come to America). In Chicago, John worked as a carpenter, machinist and pattern maker for the Deering Company on Fullerton Ave; (Deering later became International Harvester). In separate accidents there he lost all or part of most of his fingers while using a planer or shaper; (the company sent him home on a streetcar, and docked his pay for the time lost). He used only hand tools in his home workshop, where he made furniture and other household articles, and toys for his grandchildren. He built the garage and side porch at the house on 3rd St. in Wilmette. He died on October 29, 1948, and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie, Illinois.

He became a American citizen on September 11, 1896, at the Cook County Criminal Court in Chicago.

He was married in Chicago on May 21, 1891, to Isabella Feather, daughter of Stuart and Mary Ann Rendall, born August 4, 1862, in London, England. She died January 5, 1932, and is buried in Memorial Park. Her father, Stuart Feather, was English, her mother, Mary Ann Stewart Rendall, was Scottish, born at Nether Brough, Westray, the daughter of Stewart and Elizabeth Rendall. Isabella was still a child when she emigrated to America with her mother's sister, Louisa Rendall Foulis, her uncle, John Foulis, and her Aunt, John's sister, Margaret Foulis, who was a year older than Isabella. After John and Isabella were married, the Foulises were part of their household until Louisa died in 1923. The family then moved from Kostner Ave., Chicago, to 316 3rd St., Wilmette, Illinois.
